Medicare and Medicaid.  Many Kentucky residents rely upon them to enable them to receive the health care that they need.  Medicare is the name given to a health insurance program administered by the United States government, providing coverage to people who are either age 65 and over, or who meet other special criteria.  It was a program signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson on July 20, 1965.  Former President Harry Truman received the first Medicare card.

Medicaid is the U.S. heal program for individuals and families with low incomes and resources.  It is funded by both the federal and state governments, but is managed by the states.  Medicaid provided health care services to more than 46 million people in 2001.
